Immanuel Kant Ethics Essay Immanuel Kant was born in Konigsberg, East Prussia in 1724. He attended the Collegium Fridiricianum at eight years old where he was taught classicism. Then he went to the University of Konigsberg where he spent his career focusing on philosophy, mathematics, and physics. When his is father past away, Kant left the university and earned his living as a private tutor. In 1755 he returned to the University to receive his doctorate in 1756. Immanuel Kant remained at the University teaching for 15 years. He received his tenure at the University in 1770, where he stayed for the next 27 years. In 1792 he was barred from teaching or writing on religious subjects do to his unorthodox approach in his teaching by King Fredrick William II. He returned to teaching after the king had passed away five years later. In his retirement he published a summary of his views on religion. Immanuel Kant passed away in 1804. Immanuel Kant was widely known for his categorical imperative theory. Categorical imperative is how one determines one’s duty, what principles are proper, and which are not. Doing one’s duty for the sake of duty itself is better than simply acting in agreement with one’s duty. Telling the truth in order to benefit yourself is acting in accordance with duty and not acting for the sake of duty. The categorical imperative states, â€Å"Act only on that maxim whereby thou canst at the same time will it should become universal law(Keele, 2008). † Maxim in this sentence is the moral part of your action. Categorical imperative tells us it is immoral to make an exception of our self. Just like my mother would say treat and act as you would want others to treat and act towards you. In the news I view an article about â€Å"School knife attack poses ethical dilemma for daily. † In this article they talk about the Worcester New identifying a schoolboy as a suspect. The news published the boy’s name and picture on Facebook putting the boy’s life at risk. After the boy was found the news took down the boy’s picture at once. Everyone was perplexed by this situation asking why they put picture up and then took it down. According to the Worcester News, the situation change, where they were trying to find the boy to stop him from hurting himself or others and then to protecting the child. Would the newspapers actions have been ethical according to Immanuel Kant’s Categorical Imperative? First let’s take a look at the reasons why they did it. The newspaper stated they put his picture up to protect him and other, then took down to protect him. I believe they were acting in the best of society myself by putting the information up. According to Immanuel Kant’s theory they were acting in accordance with their duty. They had a duty to let the public know what was going on to protect other students and teachers If they didn’t act with such speed would the boy have been found so soon? I think not! This boy could have went on a killing spree and if the Worcester News didn’t report it they would not have been acting in the best of society and would not have been doing their duty. But then to take down the information I feel is unethical. They don’t take down any information when it comes to any other person involved in a crime. Immanuel Kant stated that it is immoral to make an exception of yourself. The Worcester News should hold to the same standards as any other crime they report. I understand that they are trying to protect the boy, but if you are going to report any other crime and not take it down this should happen in the same way. In conclusion, based on my research I feel that Immanuel Kant’s Categorical Imperative theory is important to our society today. It holds everyone to the same standards! He has help to maintain a set of standards for our society that requires everyone to be treated the same. The study of ethics is important in today’s business and government world because it sets standard for all to abide. From John Locke’s right theory to Kohlberg’s moral development stages. It is a first person narrative, almost like a diary of the person’s life in Italy. He was looking for a new society, and the reason for his travels is because he feels he should see how the people from that specific society live. He did not know anyone, or have anyone with him, nor did he speak the language. He doesn’t know where anything is or about the complicated customs. Even though in the beginning he didn’t understand these things, when he left, he had been molded into a new man.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The first few chapters are just describing the place he lived, and about a man he met who taught him Italian. He lived in a run down dirty apartment building with rates. He spent his first few days worrying about where he lived, and how he was going to adjust to his new life. He then talks more about the man who teaches him to speak, and how the man showed him around and introduced him to people in society.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  He was introduced to Lorenzo and Stefano through this man. These two people quickly became the author’s friend, and they showed him how to survive in Italy. They were compassionate toward the fact that he was an outsider, and didn’t understand their culture. They were there to help him adapt to his new life, and to help him feel comfortable. They showed him the community where they lived, and how it was overall a bad group of people. People were always getting raped and robbed, and almost every night something else would happen. This was how people survived in this community. This made people unwelcoming of new people, and why it was hard fro him to meet people in the beginning.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  He would occasionally travel to Europe, and observe the societies there. He wrote down lots of notes about the culture and the way of life. The people in Europe were welcoming of him, and it really made him think of his outlook on the people in Italy where he lived. He quietly observed a criminal who had been allowed to move in with him, because he did not want the thief to die.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  At the end he opened his eyes and saw that the society was a complete mess.

Museum Art Critique: Surprise Attack Near Harper’s Ferry Essay

When first viewing the painting, Surprise Attack Near Harper’s Ferry, created by John A. Mooney in 1868, the only thing I found myself able to focus on was the group of almost completely undressed men that appear to be bathing in a river. At first glance, I was not truly able to grasp the concept behind the painting or the exact situation that was intended to be portrayed by John Mooney, in this specific piece of historical artwork. After looking at the image more closely and thoughtfully, the first words that entered my mind immediately were fear and chaos. The background of the Surprise Attack Near Harper’s Ferry, with the exception of the smoke in the far distance, contrasts significantly to the utter chaos, fear, and confusion displayed in the portion of the painting where the group of men appear to be fearfully scattering about in the water. The background of this painting, the beautiful colored sky and other scenery including the shimmering water, differs greatly in comparison with the more focused on, somewhat disturbing image, of what appears to represent franticness and fear that is sweeping over this group of men. After observing the painting as closely and carefully as possible, the image to be portrayed caused a feeling of sadness, as well as confusion, to sweep over me. After understanding more about the painting’s meaning, I began to also feel a sense of compassion and sympathy toward these men that I couldn’t even completely comprehend at first. In the painting, Surprise Attack Near Harper’s Ferry, the artist, John A. Mooney, places a great emphasis on the â€Å"subject matter†; the subject matter being the men that were attempting to bathe in the river. Even though the subject matter, the â€Å"central focus† of the painting, seems to just be about this group of Confederate Soldiers, importance is also greatly placed upon the raw emotions shown by these soldiers; emotions that make this painting worth critiquing and analyzing in the first place. On a more positive note or view of the painting, Surprise Attack Near Harper’s Ferry easily has the ability to grab the observer’s attention because of the beautiful, shining color of the river and the broad sky; despite what realities the men might soon be forced to face in these waters. Additionally, one of the major things to notice about this painting is John Mooney’s use of repetition represented by the men in the river. Repetition is noted in the men in the painting, due to their striking, and almost identical similarities in their appearance. Another important principle of design or â€Å"formal property†, is the use of the earlier mentioned contrast between the more serious, central focal point or the â€Å"subject matter† ; also known as the Confederate men in the river, and the more calm and relaxed setting shown by the clear skies and mesmerizing color of the river itself. Contrast is also seen in the painting by the artist’s use of different colors that oppose or conflict with one another. For example, John Mooney uses a much brighter/ lighter color on these men, than what he uses for the intense green/blue river and the more cloudy/ darker color he uses for the sky, or for the background cannon smoke. Contrast is used by this artist to draw more attention to the focal point of the painting.

The first thing I noticed about this school is it’s cleanliness, the students practice trash segregation, a trash can for biodegradable and non-biodegradable and I can’t fin d a single piece of candy wrapper or any kind of rubbish on the school grounds. Paulinians do make a difference, cleanliness is next to Godliness. I can further say that the actual environment is always kept clean and is very supportive of its learners in terms of sanitation and it’s very conducive for learning. The next observation I had was the teachers who were quite patient with their students. The teachers have a very child friendly attitude but though they are they still discipline the students in a manner that is subtle. Discipline is one of the most important values a teacher must inculcate to he students; it can make or break a student. The lack of it can result to poor academic and social upbringing. Teaching discipline to students can be one of the most tedious and challenging task a teacher must go through. Therefore, I can say that teachers in this school provide a good psychological environment for the students by teaching them good values and discipline. The next part of the school I visited was its canteen because I was getting hungry and as I was going to the canteen I noticed the students were having their recess. Most of them had their packed snacks or â€Å"BAON† while some bought their snacks in the canteen. You also have to get your money change into â€Å"chits† before buying something from the canteen, me personally, I don’t get the logic why we have to get our money changed into chits to buy something inside the canteen. There is a long line of students having their money changed into chits, I think it’s a waste of time because instead of just buying their food, they have to get in line and I think it takes about 5 or 7 minutes before you can get your turn. Oh well, rules are rules, it might have a purpose and I just can’t seem to figure that out right now so I guess, I have no choice but to abide and have my money changed into chits. The food served in the canteen consist of soups/bih on/spaghetti/palabok (served only depending on the day), sandwiches, bread, and juice beverages. There is also a stall that sells MILO, a nutritious drink, a very good drink for students, something that can get them through the day. I also checked the prices of the food being sold in the canteen and I must say it’s quite affordable for grade school students. The environment in the canteen area supports the social upbringing of the students. The sight of students eating, playing and talking together peacefully reminds of the quote â€Å"no man is an island†, sometimes we also need to be with friends to gain comfort and belongingness. After having my snack I went on with my tour of the school and I checked out the library. My observation of the library is they quite have a good collection of books for the students to read and borrow. The students need to have a library card to borrow books though. I also noticed that some students are in the library during class ho urs so I asked one of them and he told me that he was told to go to the library to work on the project that he missed when he got absent. Overall the library in the grade school is a good environment for learning. Silence was strictly observed in the library of course. I didn’t want to disrupt the silence in the library so I went on with my tour. My next destination is the chapel; I just sat on one of the chairs to do my short prayer. While I was at it some grade school students also joined in. t’s quite amazing to see little kids with a big faith, unlike me. My observation of the chapel is it’s quite conducive to do a mass inside, I think it can occupy about forty (40) students at a time. The chapel is a place for students to be with God, so it enhances the spirituality of the students. So I guess that concludes my tour or should I say observation on the grade school department.
